Ways to Help

Not ready to commit to a volunteer role? Here are simple, concrete things any Missouri citizen can do right now.

Attend Public Meetings

City councils, county commissions, school boards, and special district boards must hold open public meetings. Your presence creates accountability. Attend, observe, and report back to us.

Leadership Opportunity

County Captain Program

County Captains are METG314's eyes and ears at the local level. Each Captain takes ownership of accountability work in their home county — building relationships, tracking government activity, and coordinating volunteers.

Captain Responsibilities

  • Monitor your county's public meeting schedules and attend key sessions when possible
  • Track county government news and flag potential accountability issues to METG314 leadership
  • File and track Sunshine Law requests in coordination with the METG314 records team
  • Recruit and onboard local volunteers in your county
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for tips submitted by citizens in your county
  • Attend monthly virtual Captain meetings and contribute to shared case updates
  • Build relationships with local journalists, neighborhood associations, and civic groups
  • Submit monthly county reports summarizing government activity and any concerns identified

What We Look For

The ideal County Captain is a Missouri resident with a genuine interest in local government and a commitment to nonpartisan accountability. No law degree, journalism background, or political experience required. We look for:

  • Commitment to METG314's nonpartisan mission — no active political campaigns
  • Ability to dedicate 5–10 hours per week to county accountability work
  • Strong written communication and organizational skills
  • Comfort attending public meetings (in person or via video stream)
  • Discretion with sensitive tip information and source protection

Application Process

  1. Submit the volunteer signup form above and check "County Captain" in your interests
  2. A member of METG314 leadership will reach out for a brief introductory conversation
  3. Complete a short onboarding orientation (approximately 2 hours, conducted virtually)
  4. Begin a 60-day trial period with mentorship from an experienced METG314 leader
  5. Formalize your role and receive full access to METG314's research tools and resources
